Changing teachers attitudes to new technology

PictureWhy should technology use stop at school?
One of the hardest parts of my job as ICT CoOrdinator is getting existing staff to share my passion about using technology during day to day teaching. The simple fact is that most teachers are happy with their teaching styles and are not keen on taking risks.
During an OFSTED inspection I decided to take risks and used the tablets during both my observations to engage the children, resulting in 2 outstanding judgements, which proves using technology can be highly effective!
The problem I seem to find all the time is that teachers are afraid to use new technology with a fear of breakages or misuse from the children, tablets can be a perfect opportunity to change this view.
When you think how many children use tablets and smartphones at home at an ever increasing early age why should we stop that use of technology when they get to school? I gave my set of tablets to a KS1 teacher who had never used a touchscreen device, she gave the tablets to her class and was amazed by their competence! The instantly picked them up and started choosing apps and interacting with materials.
My point is simple, take risks with your teaching using technology! Don't allow yourself to become stagnant in a world that is evolving daily!

Absolutely agree. Tablets are a great way of helping colleagues overcome their fear of technology. All too often if something doesn't work, people won't try again, and in a way, who can blame them. However, a reliable wireless system with decent tablets is so reliable this really helps.

At our school we gave each teacher a tablet to use over the summer holidays. This really helped boost their confidence too; my most reluctant colleague become one of the greatest advocates for them!

Great blog.

James, what's your email address? I have a 'Table Deployment Guide' I wrote which may be worth sharing.
